March 25, 2008 (Sarasota) - Sarasota Audubon Society has awarded its Environmental Business Award to Carlson Studio Architecture, an architecture firm specializing in sustainable design, and Beautiful Ponds, a company providing pond restoration to public and private clients. Whole Foods Market Sarasota received a Certificate of Merit.

“The tough competition and caliber of our winners this year speaks volumes about the strength of our evolving green community,” said Jeanne Dubi, president of Sarasota Audubon Society.

Carlson Studio Architecture was selected based on its long-standing commitment to sustainability, connecting the structure and design of buildings with the health and well being of people and the environment. Company projects include the LEED Gold certified, Sarasota County-owned Twin Lakes Park Complex; green single family residences; and, in partnership with the Ringling College of Art and Design, the new Wellness Community facility.

“I and all of my staff are deeply honored that Audubon, an organization that champions the rights of the natural environment, has selected our firm for this award,” said Michael Carlson, LEED AP and owner of Carlson Studio Architecture.

The Environmental Business Award was created by the Sarasota Audubon Society in 2005 to recognize Sarasota-based businesses demonstrating outstanding and sustained commitment to preserving the local environment.

“Our organization does so much to promote conservation and environmental education, but we can’t do it alone,” said Dubi. “It takes nonprofit and for-profit organizations alike to create and maintain a healthy Sarasota.”

The Sarasota Audubon Society (SAS) is the local chapter of the National Audubon Society. The group is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of birds, wildlife, and the environment through an understanding of conservation. Sarasota Audubon’s active education campaign includes monthly meetings featuring environmental topics and speakers, weekly trips to local parks and natural areas, annual overnight and international birding trips, and road clean up activities adjacent to the Celery Fields.
